....and not quite yet!

My cable hookup was a big fail so it won't be installed until this Thursday so no posts until I get internet in my apartment. At least I'll have TV for the hockey playoffs.

Sorry about the extended absence!

Stay tuned

So I'm moved into my new place sort of. There's boxes everywhere and I have to get things sorted out before my cable/internet is hooked up tomorrow morning. Blogging will resume once I have internet connection at home.

But today I'm wearing my Charlotte Taylor ant dress (last worn here) and my Fly London shoes (last worn here). Totally Buggy!

When you feel my heat, Look into my eyes

I didn't really feel like blogging on Friday so this is a delayed outfit post. First thing though, Shelley let me know what the Vintage Show TO blog posted a picture of us from the Vintage Clothing Show we went to last weekend. It's a pretty good shot of us. :)

I decided to go casual on Friday, or as casual as I can go.

T-shirt: Club Monaco (last worn here)
Jeans: Trapper Jane (last worn here)
Socks: from Durumi and Chocolate Shoes
Shoes: Fluevog Gateways | Brandenburg Light (last worn here)

Lacy socks! I was a little cold since the weather here has been topsy turvy. One day it will be 21C and then next it will be snowing.  It snowed yesterday and this is how I felt about it.

I guess it shouldn't surprise me. Spring is always volatile in Canada. I remember in 1997 it snowed on my birthday, in the middle of May.

On Friday I picked up the keys to my new place. I still do not have a firm date for when my stuff will be arriving but it was loaded onto a truck on Friday. Here's hoping it's before Wednesday.

I went in yesterday and measured and tried to visualize my stuff in the space. Really it will just be shoes here, shoes there, shoes EVERYWHERE.

Here's some pictures of the space.

This is the "bedroom". It's really a bachelor but there's a movable wall that the previous tenant moved into a very awkward spot. I'll have the movers move it more closely to that pole.

This is the walk in closet. I might need to install another bar to accommodate my clothes.

This is the kitchen space as seen from the stairs that lead down into the apartment. The stove is tiny but I'm pretty sure I could cook a turkey in it. The window there makes it bright but I'm going to need a few more lamps than the 2 I have packed with my stuff. It's a gas stove too which I am luckily used to since my parents have one.

That's the movable wall. I think I'm going to put my TV in that little alcove part and move that wall back and get a couch for this space. I have a coffee table and a few storage unit thingies so I'm going to wait until all my stuff arrives before buying anything.

It's not much but it's mine.

Ace Frehley naked

Someone found my blog by searching for "ace frehley naked". I think my work here is done.

In other news, today I drank a latte. Not really news unless you know what I haven't had a coffee since 1995. It was possibly not a good idea since after I drank it I wasn't able to do much productive work and I felt kind of gross. It's not like I don't drink caffeine since I drink tea and Coke Zero like it's going out of style but it didn't really sit well. It tasted pretty darn good though.

Yesterday after work I hobbled over to the Eaton Centre to get a pair of shoes that I could walk home in. Yes, I could have taken the street car and it wouldn't have cost the same as a pair of shoes, but where's the fun in that?

I got these Hush Puppies at Town Shoes. And while there, I ran into a guy who used to work at Cora's in Halifax who is now the Assistant Manager at Town Shoes. o_O. Small world? Yes!

Not exciting shoes but they got me home without stopping and curling up on the sidewalk in pain. So YAY to Hush Puppies! And really, black flats with corset type lacing? Seems good in my book.

Top: Smoking Lily (last worn here)
Skirt: Ziliotto (last worn here)
Tights: Hue (last worn here)
Shoes: Hush Puppies

Look at me! I'm looking over my other shoulder! I'm CRAZY! First coffee, then changing my poses! What's next?

After work I went to the Hollywood Laundromat to some some laundry. Then I went to dinner and had some awesome cherry pie for dessert.

Yes, I do believe I am happy.

Good night!

It's time to begin, isn't it?

It took me a long time to walk home tonight. First because I went into a store on Queen Street that I never would have gone into since the window is full of platform heels and flouncy prom type dresses and discovered that they carry VIVIENNE WESTWOOD clothing and shoes. *thunk* The owner showed me four pairs of heels including these Scarlet heels (which I thought were much more expensive than this).

The other reason it took so long is that I have a blister the size of Cape Breton Island on my right heel.

I'm in significant pain in this photo. I'm surprised my eyes aren't bulging out of my head.

Shirt: Spaksmannsspjarir in Reykjavik (last worn here)
Dress: Smoking Lily (last worn here)
Boots: Fluevog Presence | Intuit (last worn here)

Not really all that exciting. I'm getting really tired off my limited wardrobe and now my move is delayed until next Monday or Tuesday. :( I was hoping to be out of this place by the weekend but it looks like I'll be here and likely being kept awake by the bar downstairs.

I'm holding onto the refrigerator because I'm dying from PAINNNNNN... Poor feets.

On my way home I passed a woman who looked at me suspiciously. A minute later I heard someone behind me holler at me. She was walking back to me and asked "where's a good place to eat around here, someplace hip and funky?"  I didn't want to tell her that I've been here for 3 weeks and so far have eaten at The Golden Turtle Vietnamese place 7 times and at the Lakeview diner about 9 times so I suggested what I thought might be "funky" or "hip".

I did suggest The Saint (i might have called it "The Priest" though)  which I have eaten at so I hope she went there. They have a drink called the Knob Cobbler. o_O

It's 8:30 now. Best do my dishes and tend to my blister. Good evening all.

There's no stopping us right now, I feel so close to you right now

This post is a little late because I took myself out to Pizza Libretto for dinner. OMG so good. Prosciutto, mozzarella, basil, tomatoes...OM NOM NOM. I really like my adopted neighbourhood and am happy that I'll be staying here when I move into my new "permanent" apartment.

Today was a busy day at work. I'm still finding my feet and I hope everyone will continue to be patient with me as I learn all the new acronyms and official processes. Also at my old job I was "senior management" so I'm used to making decisions. Now I have to defer to those above me so I'm trying to not step on anyone's toes. Hopefully I'm doing it in style.

One of the directors did comment to my boss that she seems to only hire people with fabulous shoes. :)

Dress: Pi Organic bought at Chartreuse Style (last worn here)
Shoes: Pour la Victoire from Balisi shoes

My shoe enabler sent me a photo of these shoes from the Balisi window a few months ago and I was all like GHA! I ended up acquiring a pair in black but I still coveted these red leopard print heels.

I went into Balisi two weeks ago and low and behold they were 75% off! And in my size! It was kismet!  And now...they are mine.

They are very high...4.5" heels but I love them. I will love them and call them George.

I think they match my hair perfectly! (speaking of hair, I'm looking for a new stylist in TO that can help me maintain my red/dark brown colour combo. Suggestions?)

Having this small capsule wardrobe is forcing me to mix colour that I normally wouldn't consider. It's making me abandon my "matchy matchy" tendencies and look to putting different colours together like periwinkle and red leopard.

I like how the back looks with the blowsy bodice. This will be a very comfortable dress this summer.

Ok, good night all!

Trying to find the inbetween

Still sick but much better. Someone at work today said "You look much better than you did on Thursday. You looked horrible!" I know what they meant but I didn't think I looked that bad. o_O

Today I wore my more subtle cat dress.

Dress: Mango (last worn here)
Belt: Noujica (also last worn with this dress)
Shoes: Fluevog Presence | Impel (last worn on Saturday)

I'm getting tired of these shoes but I like how they blended with the design on the dress.

My favourite part of this dress is the back.

And that's all I've got for today. Other than to mention that my condolences go out to anyone who was personally impacted by the events in Boston. Terrible.

Saucy Sunday

Happy Sunday all. I'm feeling much better though I still have quite a cough. It gets worse when I'm out walking around but despite that I ventured out to another new part of the city to meet Shelley for a Vintage Clothing Show near St. Clair St West. For the first time I took all 3 forms of transit - the bus, the subway, and the streetcar. Wheee!

Sadly I have no vintage clothes with me at the moment so I decided to go all hipster. (And I was having a pretty good hair moment when I took this photo. Which reminds me I need to find a hair stylist...gha!)

Blouse: Vero Moda (last worn here)
Dress: Eva Franco (last worn here)
Tights: Peek Brooklyn (I link because I love)
Shoes: Fluevog Gateways | Brandenburg Light (last worn here)

I wanted to wear my Fluevog Ayers heels with this outfit but I knew I'd probably be doing a lot of walking so I opted for the Brandenburg brogues. They don't look to bad with this outfit.

I took this photo before I put my shoes on. Minx! These are full tights but are designed to look like thigh highs. I may have hiked my skirt up a bit when I met Shelley at the Vintage show. SAUCY!

A funny thing happened on the way to the AGO

I ended up not going to work yesterday because I woke up with a terrible earache in my left ear and sea-lion-esque cough. I don't know what I felt worse about, missing work on my second week or being so sick. I have a tube in my right ear right now and have had them in my left ear so I don't like to mess around when I feel any pain in them so I bundled up and walked to a clinic in the rain. Turns out I was correct, I do have an ear infection. I got some antibiotic drops and then spent the rest of the day in bed.

I woke up feeling a bit better but I stayed in bed until almost 11. Then I got up and got ready to go meet Shelley from Forest City Fashionista for lunch. I figured I'd have lunch and if I still felt up to it I would accompany her to the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO).

I decide to wear my new Merlin dress since it seemed like a good thing to do on a rainy Saturday.

Dress: Volt Design from Brava on Queen Street
Shoes: Fluevog Presence | Impel (last worn on Thursday)

Shelley and I ate at the Queen Mother Cafe (or The Queen Mum) and I was still feeling ok so we walked down to the AGO.

On the way there, a strange thing happened. A woman looked at us and said "I love your blog." So we stopped her and said "Which one?" Apparently she meant mine! That has never, ever happened to me before. And she let me know that my leather bracelet was made by Susana Erazo (not Grazo as I mistakenly guessed). Thank you to my blog reader for the information and for making my day! Wish I'd gotten your name.

The exhibit that Shelley and I went to see was Lost in the Memory Palace: Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller.

I'd never heard of Janet Cardiff but Shelley knew her from school in small town Ontario.  I was pretty blown away by their installations. They were visual, audio and some messed with me psychologically. And most seemed to include telephones.

My favourite was The Muriel Lake Incident where you had to wear headphones and it was like sitting in a movie theater. In one ear you head the sound of the film. In the other, you heard the voice of a woman in the audience speaking to her companion. Very cool. Cool isn't an appropriate word but I'll stick with that for now.

Here's proof that Shelley and I did indeed meet.

Not a great shot of me since my hair does not like the humidity that's in the air but Shelley looks faboo as usual. Photos do not do her boots justice. They are so very, very awesome.

Tomorrow we're meeting up again to go to a vintage clothing show. I wish I had something vintage to wear but all my stuff is still in Halifax (hopefully I'm moving into my new place next week so I can be reunited with all my stuff). In the afternoon I'm meeting another blogger, Rachel from The So-So Sewer. We're going to hit Kensington Market.

I'm so glad I moved her. So much to do, so many people to meet. I miss my friends and coworkers in Halifax terribly (and my cats) but I think this change has been good for me.

Thursday, April 11, 2013

The view from our room is a gloomy and overcast grey.

Such a grey, snowy, rainy, ice pellety day here in the big city. Instead of walking to work in the horrible weather I took the streetcar. Fun! I ended up at work about 45 minutes early though. I'm still feeling sick. The cold's moved into my lungs. I hope it's better tomorrow since I'm supposed to be going to a concert.

I'm currently lying in bed drinking tea and watching Sons of Anarchy. I wish I was in my own place and in my own bed but this will do for now.

Shirt: Oak + Fort
Skirt: Ziliotto (last worn here)
Shoes: Fluevog Presence | Impel (last worn here)

This was a very comfortable outfit to wear when not feeling very well. Not too clingy, not too casual.

And I dressed it up with the jewellery.

And the back  of this top is kinda interesting and drapey.

Tomorrow will be another rainy day and I'm going to be in training all morning, then going out for an office lunch, and then having a meeting all afternoon. It's going to be busy.

The flowers that bloom in the spring, Tra La!

Ok, I'm going to admit it. I'm sick. I'm pretty sure I have a rotten cold. You can see it on my face in this outfit photo. I stopped on my way home and bombed it with Pho and sriracha and now I'm drinking green tea. I hope it doesn't last long. Plus, who wants to call in sick on their 8th day at a new job?

T-shirt: American Apparel
Skirt: eShakti (last worn here)
Shoes: Fluevog Gateways | Brandenburg Light

Yeah yeah, another pair of shoes. Sue me. I'm sick. They're medicine.

I walked all the way to work in these and my feet are miraculously unharmed.

ERMAGHERD look at the JF and the crown on the toes. *swoon* I fall down with love for them.

I need to get red laces for them though.

Ok, I'm going to bed. At 6:30. Ugh!

I love the night life, I've got to boogie

This is the other dress that I bought on Sunday at Chartreuse Style.

(Excuse the *DUH* look on my face)

Cardigan: worn a zillion times
Dress: Lilikoi (I believe it's the Bethany Dress)
Shoes: Fluevog Wonders | Ayers (last worn here)

I was going to wear my Fluevog Impulse flats (worn here) but I noticed that the upper had pulled away from the sole on the right shoe! Quelle horreur! So at lunch time I went to the Fluevog store (which is about a 5 minute walk from my office - EEEP!) to ask about where they send shoes for repairs. They said that if I brought the shoe in they could send it out for repair (I'll pay) but it will save me making a trip out to who knows where.

I may have bought something while I was there.... *whistles*

I like this dress because the waistband is quite wide and since I have a long torso, its more comfortable.

This dress made me feel like a Disco Queen all day. The low cut front and back and swingy skirt has a 1970s Studio 54 feeling. Or it would if it was gold lame or covered in sequins. Then it would be EPIC!

See why I wore the cardigan? Too much skin for my new job. I'm not quite ready to start pushing boundaries.

Someone came into the unused kitchen while I was setting up to take pictures of my accessories so I skedaddled!

I have a full weekend planned meeting up with some bloggers! Should be fun fun FUN!

And you fell and you fell, Through the dark blue waters

My first Monday at work and I survived! Yay!! The day started off beautiful and sunny and then I ended up walking home in the rain. I guess I could have jumped on a streetcar but I kind of like my morning and afternoon walks.

Strangely, I'm wearing a jacket!

Jacket: Mary P (from a store on Queen Street I don't remember the name of)
Scarf: Alexander McQueen (last worn here)
Blouse: Gold Case (from same store as jacket)
Skirt: Smoking Lily (last worn here)
Tights: Hue (last worn here)
Shoes: Fluevog Big Presence | Desmond (last worn here)

Black is such a hard colour to photograph so in order to see any kind of detail I had to really blow out the exposure which I why I look so bright.

Even after doing that you still can't tell that the blouse has very small pleats in it. I'll call it my accordion blouse.

I don't think I've mentioned that the temporary place in which I'm living does not have a television. I'm kind of losing my mind! I don't really know what to do with myself with no TV. So I downloaded Season 4 of Sons of Anarchy. Gun running, drug muleing, violence, sex...what more can a girl want?

Ooops....almost forgot to post my bling.

Sunday in the city

So yesterday I went to the Bazaar of the Bizarre. I didn't take any pictures because I wasn't there very long. It was good, and I like the stuff the vendors had on offer, but there weren't very many of them so it was a pretty quick visit. I did, however, ride the subway and the streetcar so I can say that I'm learning the transit system.

Today I decided to take the streetcar even further west down Queen Street into Parkdale. When looking for a place to live people didn't seem to think Parkdale was a good option but there's a lot of funky vintage stores up there so I thought I'd see what's what.

I ended up buying two dresses and a jacket, having lunch, buying some groceries and then taking the streetcar back to the Trinity Bellwoods area.

Here's one of the dresses I bought.

Dress: Pi Organic bought at Chartreuse Style
Necklace: Curious Oddities bought at Fresh Collective
Hosiery: Wolford (last worn here)
Shoe: Shoe the Bear  (specifically these ones) bought at Heel Boy

First, yes you can buy flats at a store called "Heel Boy". I bought these to walk to work. I just can't bring myself to wear sneakers. I don't even own sneakers other than my sequined ones and I can't wear them every day. I've worn the heck out of these since I bought them. And the brand, "Shoe the Bear"? Such a cute name and logo!

I didn't mean to buy this dress. I tried on another one first which fit me perfectly so I knew I was going to buy it but this periwinkle one also caught my eye.  The last time I wore periwinkle was when I was a bridesmaid in my sister's wedding. I've always thought that it didn't do much for my pale complexion but I kinda fell in love with the back of this. I like how it blouses out at the top.

And comfortable as heck! It's mostly bamboo so it should be comfortable in the muggy Toronto summer. I tend to be a sweater so anything breathable is thumbs up in my book.

Here's a closer look at my necklace. What a harlot! Snogging with a man with her leg slung over the oar. It spoke to me.

Here's the jacket I bought at some vintage store. I'm not sure the name of it - oh well.

Anyway the tag says "Pant man. Made in Canada". I love the colours and look how perfectly the Zig-zag patter matches up at the button edges. Amazing!

I'll have to have this dry cleaned before wearing it since it has that musty vintage store smell to it. The pockets are still sewn up so I think it might be deadstock.

This next dress is one I bought and I can't wait until I actually wear it out to show it to you.

I'm going to call this my "Merlin dress" since the cat reminds me of my sweet black cat Merlin.

It's by Volt Design and I bought it at Brava on Queen Street.

ERMAGHERD this designer has such cute and creative designs. How would ever think to put a cat on a dress bodice, right between a woman's boobular region?

And then again on her bum-ular area? When I saw this I was all "bhbhbhbhbhbh...must have crazy cat dress."  I already have two crazy cat lady dresses but this one takes crazy to a whole new level.

Not sure if I can get away with this at work. I've got to wear it soon though since it's fabulousness should not be allowed to languish in my closet.

In closing, here are a couple of things from around my temporary apartment.

Happy Ending

I didn't get to blogging last night because I met up with someone for dinner and drinks. Didn't get home until after 1:00am. Ugh! I can't remember the last time I did that. That's way to late for this old girl.

I had a question in my comments about the designer of the Rad to the Bone dress from ModCloth, I'm guessing since it's sold out. It's from Folter clothing.  I don't see it on their website though. Maybe it's a ModCloth exclusive?

So I live very close to a funky shopping area - West Queen West (which is different from Queen Street West as it is more....westerly?) I've been walking to work and it takes about 40 minutes to get to work but coming home takes about 1.5 hours since I keep going in and out of stores. On Friday I wore a few new things that I bought from stores selling locally or Canadian designed and made pieces.

Top: Melow par Melissa Bolduc from Fresh Collective
Skirt: Ziliotto
Leather cuff: from Ziliotto but made by Susana Grazo (I can't find anything on the internet about her)
Tights: Peek Brooklyn (last worn here)
Boots: Fluevog Presence | Intuit (last worn here)

Love, love, love this skirt. I wore it all day, then when I went out last night and I'm wearing it right now. Whoooo!

The top is made by the same company as my skants!  It is a wee bit awkward and I kept futzing with it all day to try and get it arranged how I wanted it but I think I finally wrestled it into submission.

So I just got back from signing my lease on my new place! After my terrible shoebox apartment experience I was starting to think I had made a horrible error in moving here. On Wednesday I was feeling quite despondent. Then at about 3:30 I got an email from a person I had contacted on Craigslist a few weeks ago and had never heard from. She asked me if I was still interested in seeing the apartment.

So I called her and got the details. It was for a place that is extremely close to where I'm staying right now and in a house as opposed to a building. 900sq/feet, walk in closet, small but useable kitchen, laundry on site, all utilities included for less than $1000 a month.

What's the catch? It's in a basement. I haven't lived in a basement apartment since 1995 right after I finished university. I went to look at it anyway.

The owners are so nice, the area is exactly where I want to be, the house is on a quiet street, the price was right so I've chosen to take a risk and go for it! I'm hoping to not spend a whole lot of time in it anyway - I'm hoping to be much more social now that I'll be living in the big city with lots of things to do.

For example, today I'm going to mosey up to the Bazaar of the Bizarre on Bathurst Street. Ruby Nite (Nicole) told me about it in a comment on my last post. It's a short walk from here to the subway and then I can take the subway just a quick ride to Bathurst. Should be quite an adventure. I'll take my camera and hopefully take a few pictures. Maybe I should wear my skeleton dress?

Purple Cardigan

Day 3 of work and I'm a little bored. At my old job I had more responsibility and was more involved in all issues. Here my focus is quite narrow so I'm having trouble focusing on the few things that I have been given to do. I'm sure that things will be hectic soon enough so I'm not going to complain!

I might need to scope out a better place for my photos. This place has terrible lighting. For example. my cardigan is purple, not black. Even with adjusting levels and contrast I can't make it look purple. You'll have to take my word for it. I'll have to enlist the help of one of my coworkers who knows about this blog (Hi R!) and see if she can suggest a better locale.

Cardigan: Pretty Things Boutique
Dress: Desigual (last worn here)
Shoes: Fluevog Wonders | Ayers (last worn here)

I actually wore these shoes to work on Tuesday but I didn't get any blog photos. I've been walking to and from work each day which is about 45 minutes so my feet are killing me. These shoes are very comfortable so after walking in my flats I can put these on and be comfortable all day.

Most of the clothes I brought with me are jersey fabric which is easy to wash and if it wrinkles they fall out of the fabric easily just by hanging it up. Smart thinking!

Tomorrow is Friday and I'm meeting up with someone who a friend connected me with. We're going for Vietnamese food not far from where I'm living. I'm nervous but it should be fun.

Same dress, new day

Sorry about the radio silence. I was in Toronto for 3 days and then I scooted down the road to visit my family for Easter. Had fun (aka, got drunk) hanging out with my sister and brother-in-law at an old favourite pub and then eating a lot at my parent's house. I don't think I went outside from Saturday-Monday. It's still cold here. C'mere spring! Luckly the forecast is for 10C tomorrow!

Yesterday was my first day of work and I didn't have a chance to find a new covert place to take my outfit photos but today I was told about a lunch room that no one uses so I was able to slip away and take a few snaps. Only one turned out so I'm going to have to refine my technique.

Yes, I wore this dress in the last post. Cut me some slack! I only have a tiny wardrobe with me.

Cardigan: Pretty Things Boutique (worn a zillion times)
Dress: Smoking Lily (worn in the previous post)
Tights: American Apparel
Shoes: Miss L Fire

Uhhhh...these shoes might be newly acquired. I may have also bought some Fluevogs.

I didn't get a good photo of these shoes, just a crappy iPhone shot but they look like this. So totally adorkable.

I bought them at a shoe store on Queen Street that apparently has no name. There's no name on the window or above the store. It's not Balisi or Heel Boy. Yes, I have scoped them all out even though I'm going to have to be much more frugal than I was in Halifax.

Oh and I may walk by this place every day. Queen Street in Toronto is going to be the death of me. And Fluevog is opening another location in the Distillery District hopefully before International Fluevog Day/My Birthday.

Since this will be my "meaning of life, the universe and everything" birthday I will definitely be splurging and buying something on May 15th.

I may have threatened to go to work wearing a bathrobe...

In other news, I may have an apartment but I'm not going to talk about that until I sign papers and exchange money but I'll tell you about an experience I had yesterday viewing an apartment.

I saw a listing on Craigslist and contacted the poster. She emailed me back saying that she could meet me between 7:30-8:30. I said that 7:30 would be best and asked for the exact address since people here just refer to locations by cross streets such as "Queen and Spadina" or "University and Dundas". She didn't reply so I walked (OMG so much walking my feet are a mess but I'm going to have a great butt shortly) to the general location which was an under construction high rise. At this point I should have turned around and walked back to my temporary apartment but I stuck it out. At 7:40 I called her and she apparently didn't see my email so she said she'd be 20 minutes. She arrived in a Mercedes wearing $1000 heels (which were gorgeous btw. And she was only like 22 years old) and we went up the elevator.

At the door, to the least expensive place ($1250+utilities) she discovered that the key wasn't in the envelope so back down the elevator we went. She found the key in her car so up we went again. The apartment was terrible. Just over 400 square feet with 1 teeny tiny closet. The kitchen/living room was about as big as my former office. Now I know that real estate is expensive here in TO but this was a ridiculous space. In the door bathroom, then a tiny bedroom, then a tiny kitchen/living space.

I said "Uh...this is tiny." and she proceeded to lecture me on the rental market in Toronto how it wasn't like in Halifax and it was expensive and space was at a premium and that this tiny piece of shit apartment was the only thing in my limited price range and that I should start looking in Scarborough or Mississauga.

I left feeling totally discouraged and as I walked home I started to think that I had made a terrible, terrible mistake.

As I said before, there's probably a happy ending but I'm going to save that until I have signed something....stay tuned!
